The graduation from inflexible vertical market software to highly flexible, supra-market software. The "book" on selecting good vertical market software, i.e. software pre-configured for particular industries (textiles, behavioral health, law, child welfare) says to first know your requirements; then find the software that meets them with little customization. The book is soon to be outdated the same way as the book on selecting the best DOS software is outdated in today's windows software era, the same way as the "book" on selecting the best desktop software is being outdated in today's client/server and tomorrow's web-based software worlds. Vertical market software systems with ready-made (hard-coded) industry-specific screens, reports and solutions to today's problems are on their way out. They are giving way to object-oriented software systems flexible and powerful enough to address tomorrow's problems as well as today's in any number of markets aligned within an industry. Object-oriented software is destined to grow from the ashes of the popular software of today-software highly structured (hard-coded) to meet the present needs of particular markets and agencies within. |
